Lesson #5: Demonstrating physiological changes in levels of arousal
|
Students should
develop an understanding of how situations can develop a sense of
anxiety within us. They should also examine the physiological and
psychological responses we have to these
situations.

Equipment:
Method:
(a) As a lead in to the exercise, the previous lesson, provide a reasonably difficult task for students to complete as a homework task.
(b) During the class, explain that you are going to examine some features of physiological arousal. Have all students take measurements of their pulses and record these on a sheet. Talk about how pulse rates can vary depending on general fitness levels, smoking etc for a minute or so…
(c) Then announce that you have remembered the homework from the previous lesson. Select three students to come out the front to make a presentation of their findings.
(d) When they return to their seats, have all students take their pulse readings again. The students who were asked out the front should show a higher increase in pulse rate than those who remained in their seats. Ask the students who came out to the front how they felt when you asked them to come out.
(e) Discuss the results - was there an increase in pulse rate? If so why? if not - why not? (accomplished public speakers might not demonstrate such a significant increase?) Ask what other situations bring about a similar response to this.
