SIMM

32MB SIMM RAM

Shown here is an example of a SIMM RAM chip.

One drawback of DIP technology was the large amount of space the memory took up on the motherboard. SIMM or Single Inline memory Module, seen in computers even today, was developed to overcome this problem. SIMM chips are simply a circuit board with a row of attached DIPs. Then, in order to connect them to the motherboard and keep them easily removable a new slot design was introduced. Therefore, the SIMM chips are connected to the computer through slots at 45-degree angles. One drawback to the SIMM chip was the observed "chip creep" to the chips. Chip creep is when the chips seem to move out of the slots over time, due to continual heating and cooling. Note: When installing the SIMM chips to work with a 64-bit processor make sure you pair them together. Otherwise, if you are installing them with a 32-bit processor you only need to install one.
