EPROM
Another take-off and virtual improvement upon the ROM chip. EPROM
or Erasable Programmable ROM was developed to allow programmers to reprogram
permanent read only chips. The EPROM works by depositing small electrical
charges on the chip that are semi-permanent. The EPROM is erased and reprogrammed
by exposing the inside of the chip to Ultra Violet light (UV), through
a small window on top of the chip. After the erasure is complete, the EPROM
chip may be reprogrammed. The small window on top of the chip distinguishes
the EPROM chip from others. EPROM chips were used in the old IBM PCs and
XTs for storing the BIOS information.
