DVD drives were introduced in 1997 as a new storage device. DVD drives
operate like CDROMs by using a laser. Although, DVDs use a "finer" laser
that can read a smaller disk area. Using the finer laser, multiple layer
technology, and double-sided technology allows the DVD media to store an
immense amount of data per disk.
DVD players were initially introduced as an alternative to VHS players.
Then, as popularity grew, DVD players were introduced into the computer
market. Some computer users like to use DVD players to play full-length
motion pictures on their computer. In order to do this, the user must purchase
a MPEG decoder board.
Here is where I am going to insert my opinion about technology. I personally
think that DVD technology is a wide-open technology that is very promising
for the opportunity it represents. If DVD continues to mature, it has the
ability to eventually replace CD players. Although the deadline for this
feat, is set far in the future.
