 Integrated circuits become widely used
 Busicom was one of the first companies to widely use integrated circuits in calculators. This allowed a dramatic decrease in the size of electronic calculators, and eventually led to the replacement of the slide rule.  This came about due to the popularity of electronic desktop calculators.
