Dr. Lotko
Dr. Lotko is a Professor of Engineering
and Director at Dartmouth College. Dartmouth is a prominent Ivy League
school and has a very strong engineering program. Dr. Lotko uses his knowledge
in engineering concepts to provide us with an interesting look at computers.
What do you think is the most important component
of the computer industry today?
Software
If you could choose one important innovation for
the future surrounding computers, what would it be?
Three-dimensional integration of micro-components (current
VLSI technology is two-dimensional.
What do you think is the most revolutionary invention
for the computer industry?
Computer networking.
How do you see yourself involved in the computer
industry?
Peripherally. As a developer of advanced algorithms for
scientific computation.
What do you think is the most important trend
to watch in the development of computers?
Coupling computer processing power with "smart" sensors,
i.e., devices that extend human senses and the brain, combined with intelligent
algorithms that process incomplete information to arrive at a result, like
the human brain.
What is your favorite aspect of today's technology?
Visual, graphical interactivity and user friendly software.
Do you credit anyone in particular for leading
the computer industry to where it is today?
No single person.
What would you refer to as the first "computer"?
Eniac
Do you have any further points of interest you
would like to share to the readers?
I recommend reading Ray Kurzweil's "The Age of Spiritual
Machines."
