VOLUME AND CAPACITY

    Volume

The volume of a solid is the amount of space it occupies.

    Capacity

Capacity is the amount of liquid a container can hold when it is full.

    Cube

    vol1.jpg (23921 bytes)

A cube is a solid with 6 square faces and 12 equal edges.

    Volume of cube = 4 x 4 x 4
    = 64 cm3

    Cuboid

    vol2.jpg (35841 bytes)

A cuboid is a solid with 6 faces which are all rectangles.

Volume of cuboid = Length x Breadth x Height
    = 12 x 8 x 5
    = 480 cm3

    Length of cuboid =          Volume
                                    Breadth x Height
    =   480
       8 x 5
    = 12cm

    Breadth of cuboid =       Volume
                                     Length x Height

    = 480
       12 x 5
    = 8 cm

    Height of cuboid =        Volume
                                 Length x Breadth
    =   480_
       12 x 8
    = 5 cm

    Examples:

    1. A rectangular tank 35 cm by 30 cm by 20 cm contains water to a height of 15 cm. Find the volume of water in the tank. (Give your answer in litres)
      vol3.jpg (67487 bytes)

    Volume of water in the tank = 35 x 30 x 15
    = 15 750 cm3
    = 15.75 litres

    2. A container has a square base of 8 cm. What is the height of the box if its volume is 384 cm3?
      vol4.jpg (39847 bytes)

    Area of square base = 8 x 8
    = 64 cm2

    Height of container =   Volume
                                      Base area

    = 384
        64

    = 6 cm

The height of the container is 6 cm.
