| Fertilizer Application |
Commercially grown orchids very much depend on the fertilizer appliedas a nutrient source. Supply of nutrients can be in the form of organic fertilizers as well as processed or raw organic fertilizers. Fertilizer requirements change accordingly to the growing stage of the plant. In general, orchids require Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Pottasium, Magnesium, Calcium, Magnesium, Sulfur and trace elements such as Manganese, Zinc, Ferum, Boron, Copper and Molybdenum to enhance vigour and production of flowers.
There are many commerrcial fertilizers available for orchidcultivation. However, it is necessary for the grower to know the contents of each fertilizer to accommodate the requirements of the different stages of growth.

As a guide, nutrient requirement for different stages of growth are as follows: Seedling and young plants - Require 3-4 times ratio of N to P and K Unmatured plants - Requires a balance amount of N:P:K Given 2-3 times a week Matured plants - Reduce the amount of N to half of P and K Fertilizer should only be applied to the plant in the late afternoonand avoid any application of fertilizer during midday. Spray foliar fertilizer thoroughly through the plant.
