What to Look Out For!
 What is it Used For?
The main use for genetic engineering today is in the production of food, mainly crops. Genetic engineering is beginning to be used more in the medical industry, but not on the same scale as with the food we eat every day.

Genetically Engineered Crops

The following is a list of genetically engineered foods that have already been approved for sale:
  • soybeans
  • corn, not blue corn
  • canola
  • papaya
  • potatoes
  • tomatoes
  • yellow crook-neck squash
  • red-hearted chicory (radicchio)
  • cotton
  • dairy products from cows injected with the genetically altered hormone recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH)
Not That Bad, You Say?

Although this list seems relatively limited, keep in mind that many products use by-products of these crops, such as corn syrup from corn, which is now used in all kinds of foods. This is also just a list of the crops already approved for sale. There are many more which have been developed that have not yet been approved.

Find out what you really need to look out for.
