The biotechnology industry understands quite well that consumer polls
over the past ten years show that 80-90% of Americans support
mandatory labeling, and that over 60%, if foods were clearly
labeled, would try to avoid buying GE products. The reason that
there isn't more of a controversy yet in the USA is
because almost half of all consumers falsely believe that
there aren't any GE foods (except for dairy products with rBGH)
on the market. A 1999 study by the International Food Information
Council, a government and industry-funded group, found that 47%
of Americans believe that there aren't any genetically engineered
foods on the market yet.
The Public Needs to Know
This is exactly why this site has been created! If the public only knew of the many foods already being genetically engineered, and how much they're already eating, they could make well informed choices. Once they know about the food they're eating, and the possible dangers, they can learn how to get GE foods labeled, and what to do to stop it all together.
