Land and Climate Evidence

The showing of Atlantis is based on the one hand on depth sounding in doubtful areas which are not very clear due to the rugged ocean floor not very clear and on the other hand on Plato’s research.

Therefore a land-mass builds up, which consists of a plain surrounded by high mountains in the Southwest. Altogether it is 1100 kilometres long in north - south extension. The North- and the Northeast sides are surrounded by a 300-metre long mountain chain. In its middle there is the Pico Alto which is a mountain with gigantic dimensions. The mountain chain protects the plain, which lies in the South, from cold and rough winds from the North as well as from rain and snow which are caused by the Arctic current. Because of the Gulf Stream they are brought very close to the North coast. Therefore the already mentioned plain in the South and Southwest of the mountains developed (600 x 370 kilometres). ”(...) The whole country was said by him to be very lofty and precipitous on the side of the sea, but the country immediately about and surrounding the city was a level plain, itself surrounded by mountains which descendent towards the sea; it was smooth and even, and of an oblong shape, extending in one direction three thousand stadia, but across the centre inland it was two thousand stadia. This part of the island looked towards the south, and was sheltered from the north. (...)” <http://classics.mit.edu/Plato/citias.sum.html> The warm water of the Gulf Stream, as already mentioned, pushed softly against the West coast. According to that a mild subtropical climate existed. A warm zone developed in the plain as well as a mountain chain covered with glaciers and snow.

Because of this special climate many freshwater seas and little rivers emerged. This corresponds to Plato’s text. The island contained many different climate types and therefore a rich flora and fauna developed. Plato used in his text some pictorial expressions that could point to the existence of different kinds of fruit on Atlantis. The climatic circumstances which the plants needed were given on the island. The soils were, because of the volcanoes, rich with minerals.

It seems as if there was a great vegetation like Plato already described. He talks in his text also about elephants that would have had the perfect conditions for living on the island. This can be confirmed by the elephants living in the Northwest of Africa which would have climatically fitted Atlantis.
