My brother recently had a root canal. What is a root canal? He said they had to fix a nerve in the tooth. I didn't think there were nerves in teeth. Does it hurt a lot?

Actually, Melissa, root canals are very important procedures. An endodondist is a person who does root canals for a living, but dentists can perform the operation as well.
Every tooth has a nerve. If the nerve gets damaged, it needs to be removed. A dentist has to open the gums where the damaged nerve is and remove it. This can be extremely painfull, so the patient (like your brother) is put to sleep so he doesn't feel anything.
