Health Column - Issue 3

Dear Dr. Morrison,
Hi, my doctor said I might have a type of folliculitus, and the only thing I can think that caused it was a cocoa butter lotion that I'm using. But, I've been using it for two weeks and just got the infection 2 days ago. Could that still be the cause? Could a change in diet be the cause? Because I've also been eating a lot more proteins, like egss, and a lot less carbs lately. Could you tell me more about this skin disorder, how it's treated, and how long it takes to cure completely? I was also wondering why it is making my stretch marks a lot more noticeable. Please give me any info you can, I really really appreciate it. Thank you!

Dear Jessica,
Folliculitis is a skin infection that occurs when bacteria becames trapped in the hair hair follicles to grow. The cocoa butter lotion you are using is clogging the hair follicles creating a shield under which the bacteria can grow without soap and water affecting it. It is not caused by diet. You should stop using the lotion or cut down heavily.
Stretch marks are not agravated by folliculitis. They are usually during pregnancy as the uteris swells. Laser surgery or Retin A (a medicine) can help reduce these marks.
