Soccer
Champions League?
Soccer in the begin of the Olympics was a kind of Champions League. In 1896 was the soccer not nice, there was a qualifier between two Greek teams, and the winner played against a Danish team. The Danes won from Smyrna (the Greek team) with 15-0. In 1904 there were again 3 teams, one Canadese team and two American teams. By the Interim-Games just the same as in 1896, the Danes won from Smyrna.
In 1924 was the tourney 22 teams big, and in 1952 there had to be qualifiers because of the too many teams which wanted to join the Olympics.
10!
The greatest victory at the Olympics was in 1908 when the Danes won from France with 17-1. The Danish vanguard scored 10 goals in that match.
In 1964 there was a Hungarian who scored 12 goals in the whole tourney.
In the history of the Olympic soccer, there was just one draw match in a final. Argentinia - Uruguay was 1-1. They played again and Uruguay won with 2-1.
A strange goal
In 1948 was there in the semi-final a strange goal. The Swedes were all at once in the attack, and if someone should shoot than should the Swedish vanguard Gunnar Nordahl stay offside. So he jumped into the goal (and out the field). Someone shot and Nordahl catched the ball (the Danish goalkeeper laid after a sortie without a chance in the grass, 5 m from the goal).
Incidents here and there
By soccer too there were enough incidents. In 1920 walked the Czechoslovak team away from the field before rest, because they didn't agree with the official (Belgium leaded with 2-0). The match was blown off and Czechoslovakia was disqualified.
In 1936 there were enough incidents. Peru retreatted after they heard that the match in the 2nd round had to be played again against Austria (Peru won the first match). Austria 'won' and reached the final (Austria became 2nd).
