In 1896 might no professionals participate at the Olympics, but by fencing it might. There were special matches for fencingteachers. In 1900 there were matches between fencingteachers and amateurs. In 1896 won Léon Pyrgos the foilpart from his teacher, and was with that the first Greek who won a gold medal at the modern Olympics.
In 1924 was foilfencing introduced for women, in 1960 for womenteams too. In 1936 came the electrical hitregistration introduced for swordmatches and in 1956 for foilmatches.

Press not interested

By the foil for women was there in 1956 no British press present, because their Gillian Sheen. They hadn't expect that Gillian Sheen should won the gold medal (fencing is a 'less important sport' for the Brittish people).
