Here was a record of sports: 28! Three of those were demontration-sports, but it were 28. New parts were among other things: 10 km (6.25 miles) race-walking for women, badminton, baseball, the slalom by kayak and the Canadian canoe. As demonstration were: Basque pelota (Spanish variant at hand-tennis) to keep the ETA (Basque separatist movement) quiet, roller-hockey and taekwando.

By these Olympics there were 257 gold medals to win. That were there 20 more than in Seoul (1988).

By the openings ceremony was brought the Olympic Torche in by a Spanish canoeist (Herminio Menendez), who gave it to a Spanish basketball player (Juan Antonio Epifanio). Finally shot a Spanish archer (Antonio Rebollo) the fire over a distance of 60 meter into the Olympic bowl, the fire burnt.

The closing ceremony was boycotted by Turkmenistan, they didn't come. Because the weightlifter Orasdoerdijev was been excluded of participating by his coach.

During these Olympics controlled almost 1800 players for doping, there were 5 players founded 'positive'.
The wieghtlifter Ibragim Samadov (CIS) refused his bronse medal, because he was frustated by the results. He is suspended for the rest of his life.


There were some more remarkable things too.
The wrestler Sjabrajlov (CIS) refused his silver medal after his lost final against the American Jackson.
By the 10 km-walk (6.25 miles) was Alina Ivanova (CIS) disqualified through one technical walkfault. Otherwise, she was first.
By boxing was there bad officials just like in Seoul, the dutch boxer Raymond Joval became one of the victims of that.
