In 1974 decided the IOC to give the Olympics of 1980 to the USSR, with an ample majority, there was at that moment none resistance at all to that decision. But in December 1979 had the USSR invade Afghanistan, and through that had many not-communistic countries a boycott. This boycott wasn't fixed at economy or trade of the USSR. At a rough estimation there were 45 à 50 countries who boycotted the USSR for political reasons. The most important of them were the USA, West Germany and Japan.

The supplies in Moscow and the 'Lenin Stadium' (for 130,000 people), were excellent and the different numbers of sport drew many visitors.
By the new and re-entered events, were the numbers of gold medals 203 (shared numbers 1 not counted).

By the 100 meter sprint was in 28 year not so combatted, because: the Briton Alan Wells won with a time of 10.25 sec, and the second place was for Silvio Leonard (Cuba), who finished in 10.25 sec too.
