After in 1908 an unsuccessfull try to be the host city of the Olympics, it succeed now in 1960. While emperor Theodosius 1567 years before these Olympics forbade the old Olympics, in Rome.

Before these Olympics was there built a brand-new stadium and other things special made, but they used old monuments in Rome too. So began the Marathon on one of Rome's hills, the Capitolinum, and finished on the Via Appia (an old Roman way) by the Bow of Constantijn. This was the very first time that a Marathon not began and finished in the Olympic Stadium.

The Olympics were opened by the Italian president: Giovanni Granchi.
