These Olympics were in the sign of soberness. The British Olympic Association organized it, under the chairmanship of Lord Burghley. Great Britain finished just 6 years of war, and food and clothes were still on the ration. Because in the war Great Britain was bombarded by the Germans, there was a big housingproblem, especially in London. The men were placed in RAF- and hutments and the women in university buildings. There was built a provisional running-track in the Wembley Stadium. Other buildings were something changed for numbers of the Olympics.
The total costs of these Olympics were a bit less than 600,000 pound sterling, and after all there was made a profit of 10,000 pound sterling.
The Olympics were opened by H.R.H. King George
. The weather was at the opening-days something hotter than other years, but after that there came misery rain.
Of course were Germany and Japan not invited.
This year was there a very remarkable goal in the soccer-final between Denmark and Sweden. The Swedish vanguard Gunnar Nordahl (one of the 3 brothers of this winnerteam) jumped into the Danish goal during a Swedish attack to preclude that he should be off-side. The attack was rounded with a effective header of the Swedish inside left Henry Carlsson. In absence of the Danish goalkeeper catched Nordahl the ball.
