Amsterdam tried to get the Olympics of 1916, 1920 and 1924, and the Netherlands got finally the Olympics of 1928. Immediately there were some new things introduced. The Olympic fire, which burnt from the beginning to the end of the Olympics. And the running-track got for the first time the official proportions (400-meters (that's about 437 yards)). At the track was something special too, a big result-board.

At the opening ceremony were hundreds of pigeons set free, as symbol of peace.

For the first time there were track-and-field-events for women, which meant many records.

At the track-and-field-events was something to laugh: the Finn Nurmi fell in the cistern at the steeplechase (he got the silver medal after all).

At the sailing-race joined a crown prince. The one from Norway, on board the Norna. That crown prince became later King Olav from Norway.

At equestrian, Jumping (Prix des Nations), won Frantisek Ventura with his horse Eliot (both from Czechoslovakia) and had a clear round.
