First were these Olympics given to Rome, but during the Interim-Olympics they said that they shouldn't held it.

And for the first time were the athletes registered by their own country and not more by their sports club, university, etc.

The Olympics took a long time, the tournaments were very divided, and at 13 July opened King Edward the Olympics in the White City stadium.

There were lots of mistakes in London, the American and Swedish flags weren't hoisted during these Olympics. The Finns didn't want to march behind the Russian flag, and came in without flag.
These were the real complaints-Olympics. Officials who whined. The winner 110-meter hurdles, who won with a bible in the hand, had a complaint because there had to play at Sunday.
British officials got complaints, because of the wrong classify of qualifiers, tamper with the rules to advantage the Britons, and the encourage of their own athletes.
The officials made a big mistake; they disqualified an American after the final, because he should have hindered the Briton. There had to be a "walkover" (it had to run one more time), and the two other Americans who had run the final refused to run it again, so the Briton got the golden medal.
After the brochure "Answer on the complaints at the Olympic Games" was come out (made by the match organizers), was it for the people too far. The decision: the tournament organizers should be settled through the international sports-federation, and not through the host country.

At the marathon was the Italian Dorando Pietri as first in the stadium, but he fell five times in the last round, then the officials dragged him over the finishline. The chef from the one who finished as second, lodged a complaint, and the complaint was accepted. Pietri was disqualified, the king and queen of Italy felt with him so much, that they gave Pietri 6 days later a golden cup.

Another problem, the marathon, which wasn't 25 miles, but 26 miles and 385 yards. Because then was the start for the children-residence of "the Windsor Castle". After 16 years would be this the official distance.

Small facts:

  • The only "walkover": the 400-meter men. 1 athlete.
  • First black man with a golden medal: John Taylor (USA).
  • There was for the first time in the history of the Olympics some winter-sports; 4 speed-skating matches.
