After some squabbles were the Olympics in St. Louis. The first idea was to hold them in Great Britain, after that in Philadelphia, 'de Coubertin' wanted them in New York, but T. Roosevelt decided that the Olympics should be in St. Louis.
The Olympics in the States were not a success, much people didn't make the way over to the States. Through this were 533 athletes from the USA. And 238 of the 282 medals were for the USA.
At track-and-field (400-meter run) weren't qualifiers through which everybody joined the final.
The running-track was very different than the European. The track was 1/3 mile and had a right piece of 220 yard.
Like always, about the marathon was the most talked, but this time through a mistake! Fred Lorz was as first over the finish, but he was disqualified, because he had driven in a car the half of it. Because he had no energy anymore, the car had the same after a while, but at that moment Lorz could walk farther. It was found out when Hicks came exhausted over the finish (he used doping, at least people say, but at that moment there wasn't control at that, so he got the gold medal).
Small facts:
st black distance-runner: Lentauw from South-Africa.
