In the stadium were more then 40,000 spectators, and thousands on the mountains about the stadium. King George opened official the Olympics.

At that moment started the History of the modern Olympic Games.

The very first competition was the qualifiers of the 100 meters sprint, won through: Francis Lane from the United States of America.

But the first medal was for James Brendan Connolly, at the triple jump, again from the United States of America.

The one who finished as first in 1896 got a silver medal and a crown of olive branches, the second a bronze medal and a laurel wreath, the third only the honor.

The marathon was won through a Greek shepherd, Spyridon Louis, who won the only track-and-field-medal for Greece.
