In 1970 were the Olympics given to Denver, a city in the American state Colorado. But at the end of 1972 was in Colorado a referendum, and the result was that the habitants of Colorado didn't want to organize the Olympics. In 1973 had the IOC a meeting. 4 cities wanted to organize the Olympics now: Lake Placid, Tampere (Finland), the Mont Blanc territory and Innsbruck. The IOC had chosen for safe, so for Innsbruck, because Innsbruck had all facilities. So, these Olympics were given to Innsbruck in February 1973.

Much of the facilities from 1964 were still in Innsbruck, so there had to spent only 'a few dollars' (44 million) to organize the Olympics.

One and a half million visitors and 600 million televiewers watched the 37 numbers.
