try using your 8 year old monitor with a friend's more recently built computer. if the video fails in this test, it's probably the monitor that's to blame. if it works just fine, try using your friend's more modern monitor attached to your computer. this should tell you if it is indeed the monitor. i'm guessing you simply need a new monitor.
