Here's an explanation. Close EVERY program in Control Alt Delete
vvvvv***********EXCEPT***********vvvvv
"Explorer" (your shell that the OS runs in) and "Systray" (your system tray)
^^^^^***********EXCEPT***********^^^^^
Once you do that, turn off your screen saver. This means switch the menu to "(None)"
Then run scandisk and you will notice it will run much faster and wont have to quit because something is writing to the hard drive. Trust me. before I did this trick, it took 4 hours to run defragmenter. After I did this trick a month later and ran it afterwards, it took about 30 minutes - 1 hour (depending on the speed of your hard drive and CPU) :-) After defrag finishes, you may turn on your screen saver again and then restart the computer to get the programs in the control alt delete running again.
If you dont do this already, I would suggest that you run Scandisk RIGHT before defrag everytime. That way you can accomplish 2 tasks right in a row.
