Big Computer Problem

I am having trouble when my computer starts up. It will go through the first load up screen, it will check the NVRAM and say that it is ok, then it will check for the primary, and secondary, master drives, and slave drives. Next it will go to the screen that provides the diagnostics fo rmy computer, it will search for the boot records from IDE-0, it will find that and say ok. Then I wait about two minutes, then a message appears that says: Disk error reading OS. Can anyone please help me out with ideas that I might try to fix this problem.
My computer has a pentium 2 and runs Windows 98.
