I think it was a publicity stunt. While it's important to know the effects of space on the elderly, I don't think that NASA should have put this research before others.
But still, it was nice to see him go back. We owed him because after his first trip up, he was never allowed to go back. As a child, I enjoyed watching him go up the first time. And as a grown up, I enjoyed watching him go up again.
