Too much of
a good thing?

Studies show that the average teen today is less physically fit then ever before. Whatever physical condition you are in, you can benefit from an aerobic exercise program. By exercising, you help increase your heart rate and benefit your body.

Some recommended aerobic activities are:

  • Speed Walking
  • Running
  • Cross-Country Skiing
  • Biking
  • Swimming
  • Roller Skating
  • Ice Skating

However, before you start an intense exercise program you should consult a doctor or physican before you do anything; this especially applies if you suffer from a medical condition. If you are very overweight, running can be very strenuous on your body; many people find it easier to try biking, walking, or skating first. After they have worked up their stamina and find it easier to exercise, they advance to more intense activities like running or swimming. If you do not want to exercise in front of people and want to keep it to yourself, try activities like jumping rope, jogging in place, or doing sit-ups.

Many people agree that you should always set goals before you begin your exersise program. You can set many types of goals, such as being able to run a certain number of minutes a day, decreasing your weight to a comfortable size, or even being able to reduce your dress size. You should always start simple and work twoards your goal. If you start too fast, it's easy to get tired out, and the potential for injury is much greater.

For example, if you want to exercise by running, try starting by walking for 15-30 minutes a day. Slowly increase that amount until you feel comfortable running for extended periods. You never want to strain yourself and put your body through tourture. If you start to feel pain, stop for a moment and slow down. In order to increase your physical health, you must exercise vigorously and often. Try to work up to 20 to 30 minute exercise periods for optimum benefits.

When you begin, your exercise routine should also include a short warm-up time to prepare your body for more strenuous exercise.
