Helen's Introduction to San Diego Zoo
That's me, Helen, you host at the Zoo!
Hi and welcome to San Diego Zoo. We will be seeing some endangered species, so let's go check it out!
Asian Elephant [ View Profile ]
The Asian Elephant
An Asian elephant feeds sixteen hours a day, eating about 400 pounds (181 kg) of leaves and grasses. They always need to be near water because they drink about 61 gallons (230 liters) a day!
Gorilla [ View Profile ]
The Gorilla
Gorillas don't swing through the trees (as many Tarzan movies may suggest), but instead live most of their times on the ground. They climb trees only if they are threatened or if there is food at the top.
Jaguar [ View Profile ]
The Jaguar
The jaguar loves to stay near water and will sometimes hunt water animals, including crocodiles and snakes!
Lemur [ View Profile ]
The Lemur
These creatures don't use their hands to pick leaves or fruit. Instead, they pull branches to their mouths and eat directly from them!
Lion-tailed Macaque [ View Profile ]
The Lion-tailed Macaque
The lion-tailed macaque’s tail may be one-third to one-half the length of its body! Because they live in trees, macaques fulfill their need for water by licking moisture that collects on leaves!
Panda [ View Profile ]
The Giant Panda
Pandas spend 10-12 hours a day feeding, and during this time they consume 23-36 pounds of bamboo roots, shoots and leaves!
Malayan Tapir [ View Profile ]
The Malayan Tapir
Tapirs are among the most primitive herbivores, dating back 20 million years, to when it roamed the northern hemisphere!
Indo-Chinese Tiger [ View Profile ]
The Indo-Chinese Tiger
Tigers live in remote forests in hilly to mountainous terrain, much of which lies along the borders between countries.
