UNICEF
UNICEF or the United Nations Children's Fund
was founded in 1946 as the sole organization of the United Nations dedicated exclusively
to the welfare of children. It was mandated to advocate and to work for the protection of
children's rights, to help the young meet their basic needs and to expand their
opportunities to reach their full potential. The UNICEF Executive Board reaffirmed this in
1996 when it adopted a statement on the mission of UNICEF. It says that UNICEF "is
guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child and strives to establish children's
rights as enduring ethical principles and international standards of behavior towards
children."
The heart of UNICEFs operations is based at its central headquarters
in New York City. Asides from their central headquarters, UNICEF also has eight regional
offices, 125 country offices and 37 National Committees located mostly in various
countries. Add to that, UNICEF works hand in hand with national governments,
non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other United Nations bodies in 161 countries and
territories.
The private sector has also lent a hand in UNICEFs cause. As a
matter of fact, their efforts are best shown in well-known UNICEF cards, calendars and
stationeries.
