National Economic and Development
Authority
The National Economic and Development Authority, or NEDA, is
basically a governmental body that ensures the economic and
efficient delivery of public services and needs. In 1972, the
functions of several government organizations, including the
National Economic Council and the Presidential Economic Staff, were
all integrated under one body. Thus was born the NEDA.
After the bloodless revolution of 1986 (The 1986 EDSA Revolution), Pres. Corazon Aquino issued
Executive Order No. 5. It called for the reorganization of the
NEDA. In the July of 1987, EO No. 230, which was completely
implemented February of the next year, further organized the NEDA.
It was then that the NEDA commenced operations under its present
state.
As with many other organizations, the powers of the NEDA stem
from its Board, which is comprised of the President as chairman,
the Secretary of Socio-Economic Planning and NEDA Director-General
as vice-chairman. The members are the Executive Secretary and the
Secretaries of Finance, Trade and Industry, Agriculture,
Environment and Natural Resources, Public Works and Highways,
Budget and Management, Labor and Employment, and Interior and Local
Government.
According to EO 230, Sec. 4, which gives the President the power
to add members whenever he deems necessary, the Secretaries of
Health, Foreign Affairs, Agrarian Reform, Science and Technology,
Transportation and Communications, Energy, and the Deputy Governor
of the Central Bank of the Philippines have been added to the NEDA
Board.
Various committees from different sectors of government assist
the NEDA Board in its role as the social, economic, and policy
coordinating body.
The following organizations comprise the family of the NEDA and
make up the Philippine statistical system:
- National Statistics Office
- National Statistical Coordination Board
- Philippine Institute for Development Studies
- Bureau of Labor and Employment Statistics
- PSA ASSIST
- Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (Central Bank of the
