Jesuit Volunteers Philippines

Inspired by the ideals of St. Ignatius of Loyola, JVP volunteers live and work according to the values of Ignatian spirituality, service, simplicity, solidarity and "subversion" (being agents of change). Thus, they help build a sovereign society of peace and freedom participation, and authentic Filipino values.

The Jesuit Volunteers Philippines (JVP) is a lay organization of young men and women who assist in social, pastoral, and development work of missions, apostolates, NGOs, schools, and social development agencies. Mostly graduates of Jesuit schools, JVP volunteers are assigned one to three years to institutions, which share the JVP vision especially those that have the greatest need for volunteers.

Jesuit Volunteers are provided with formation and support programs to enhance their knowledge, skills, orientation, and spirituality for more effective service.

For returning volunteers (alumni), JVP provides venues for transformation by building local communities and networks of support in order to deepen the JVP vision in their life and work.

JVP also seeks to establish linkages with other organizations in order to achieve mutual goals and to promote volunteerism.

Founded in 1979 by some Jesuits of the Ateneo de Manila University and the Loyola House of Studies, JVP has worked closely with Society of Jesus whose Ignatian spirituality JVP volunteers incorporate into their lifestyle, work, community, reflection and prayer.

What is the JVP volunteer service program?

This program provides a number of features aimed at facilitating the personal and communal development of the volunteers as they respond to the need for social development.

First, care is taken in the selection of persons who are to serve in JVP. Second, the areas seeking assistance are carefully screened. Third, every effort is made to match the volunteers with the type of work and place for which they are most suited.

Fourth, training, formation and support programs are provided for the volunteers throughout their service year. Fifth, returning volunteers are assisted in re-integrating into their chosen career through the Re-entry program. Sixth, former volunteers are offered opportunities for formation and support as they continue living out the JVP spirit.
