Three blue-collar workers, mainly a household helper / cook, a security guard, and a newspaper delivery man, were interviewed to gain some insight on the relativity of education and employment in the Philippines.

ADDRESS: Purok-Dungguan, Naga, Zamboanga del Sur
CONDITION OF HOUSE: It’s a one-step style house, a hap house, as Cristita calls it. It has a concrete floor, wooden walls, and a roof of sheet metal.
HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS: The house is being rented out as of now. She has no family members living in it at the present.
RELIGION: Roman Catholic

FAMILY HISTORY: They went through a series of jobs. Cristita’s husband worked primarily as a security guard. His first places of work were at the pier 18 at a nearby docks. He then moved on to theSta. Clara Plywood Company, which later shut down. He then served in another power company, then moved on to Caltex. As of now, he is working as a guard at the Pasig View Resort.

PROVINCIAL BACKGROUND

PROVINCE: Zamboanga
REASONS FOR MOVING: The main reason why they moved here was because their province was becoming very chaotic. The war between the Muslims and the government was getting very violent. In fact, explosions and the sight of Marines became common to their family. A large part of the population was being evacuated because of the skirmish. They moved here to Manila to seek jobs and a more peaceful life.
WORK / OCCUPATION IN PROVINCE: The primary livelihood in their province was fishing. Cristita’s eldest son also was able to land a job as a messenger for the JBC Company in Cagayan.
CONDITION IN PROVINCE: Cristita described her province as "…magulo, and critical…" As mentioned above, massive evacuations were taking place. The fighting was getting more and more intense. They were scared, and so they decided to leave.

REASONS FOR STOPPING: She lost interest in her studies and little finances brought about part of this.
OPINION ON EDUCATION: It’s expensive. One’s education depends on the amount of money one can afford to give for tuition.

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

She wants her children to finish their schooling. She wants them to be hardworking so they can get into college. This is mainly because she sees that her children are interested in learning but they lack sizeable amounts of money. She wants them to study hard so they have better chances of earning scholarships someday.
