Being a Singaporean, I, Lishan, am fortunate enough
to enjoy so much luxury and comfort. We have good housing, clean
drinking water, well-developed sanitation, easy accessible
transportation, proper education, advanced technology, availability
of recreation, and a lot more other pleasures. Living in the midst
of such luxury, it is hard for me to picture the state of being
poor because it has to be experienced to really understand its
suffering. However, I happened to come across this opportunity of
participating in ThinkQuest, a website project which led me to meet
Jason and Jason.
This opportunity drew me nearer to the situation of
poverty. As a result, I began to feel blessed and able to realize
the other world beyond the "dot" of Singapore. Our objectives of
introducing this website are actually to bring out the suffering of
the poor and feature on the causes which the people of the world
may not be aware of. Furthermore, we intended to reach out to the
other fortunate folks in the world so that they will realize the
existence of suffering and sorrow in other parts of the world while
they enjoy their life in comfort. Hopefully, they can do their part
or at least be concerned about them.
Being in the team, I feel I am really lucky. I have
a group of wonderful folks who guided this ignorant frog in the
well along everything. I am basically the researcher and writer who
cant write really fantastically but always tried to improve
myself in organizing information and restructuring the write-ups.
In doing so, I believe I have learned a great deal. In the process
of editing the write-ups, I have lots of thanks to forward to. They
are my Geography teacher, Mrs. Josephine Sherwood, and English
teacher, Mrs. Teresa Chan. They have been the most willing to
assist me in every hurdle I met. In addition to that, I would like
to thank Jason Tablante and his most helpful friends in not minding
the trouble of going through the write-ups and correcting any
mistakes that I have made. I would like to thank the
Head-of-Department of Information Technology, Mrs. Lai Swee Choo,
for giving me the chance to attend the talk on participating in
Thinkquest before this work ever started. I would also like to
thank Mrs Fung Hwee Hua, my most dedicated motherly figure, who has
been keeping track of my progress in this project and Miss Lim Tze
Mien for assisting me in getting some information.
Of course, I want to thank my school, CHIJ Saint
Nicholas Girls School, for giving me these opportunities to
develop myself and to upgrade myself to such advancements. This can
only be possible under the leadership of its most dedicated
principal, Mrs. Huang-Lee Poh See. Last but definitely not the
least, I would like to thank my family members and especially my
parents for providing me with the upbringing and all the comfort
that I have enjoyed for sixteen years. Thank you very much to
everyone who has helped me in one way or another.
