In 1984, Steen Willadsen used this technique to clone the first farm animal, a sheep. The key to Willadsen's breakthrough was the discovery that coating an embryo in the jellylike substance agar protected the embryo when it was temporarily inserted into sheep oviducts. Without the coating, the host sheep's immune system would attack the implanted embryo.
