About This Process: The Honolulu technique was developed by Teruhiko Wakayama of the University of Hawaii and used to create three generations of genetically identical cloned mice (an animal considered very hard to clone). Though the discovery was viewed by some as only additional confirmation that Dolly was indeed a true clone, the Honolulu technique is superior to the method used by Ian Wilmut to create Dolly. It is speculated that the Honolulu Technique's greater success rate is the result of the chemical bath used to trigger the development of the egg cell. Scientists believe that such a bath is less destructive to the cell than an electric shock, which was used by Wilmut to incite egg development. For detailed information on this process, see the technical summary.
