Henry Thoreau was born in 1817, in
Concord, Massachusetts. He began grammar school when
he was 11, and in 1833 attended Harvard College for
four years. He then taught at a public school for two
weeks, and then at a private school. He began
publishing poems and essays in 1840. From 1845-1847
Thoreau was staying at Walden Pond. In 1848, Walden
returned to his parents’ home, and continued
living with them for the rest of his life, while
making many trips to speak and give lectures over the
years. He continued to write and publish new works.
He died after a drawn out struggle with tuberculosis
in 1862, at the age of 44.
