Edmund Rostand was a famous French
playwright and poet. He wrote his plays in verse, and
showed great skill and imagination. His most famous
play, Cyrano de Bergerac is a classic of the modern
theater.
He was born in Marseille, the son of a
journalist. He studied in Marseille and Paris. He
became a lawyer, but soon turned to literature.
Rostand published a small volume of poems in 1890.
His poetic play, The Romancers, was produced in Paris
four years later. Three other plays followed before
he won his greatest success with Cyrano De
Bergerac.
Rostand was elected to the French
Academy in 1902. He died before completing his last
dramatic work.
