Miguel de Cervantes could be seen as
a war hero as well as a writer. He was an officer
aboard a Spanish ship in the Mediterranean when
he took his place in battle while sick, and was
shot three times. Then he was captured by pirates
and not ransomed until five years later. Only
then did he begin to work as a writer and
government worker. However, Cervantes was denied
financial support by the King of Spain, and this
is thought to have caused the disappointment and
disillusionment that prompted Cervantes to write
his satirical novel of the Spanish knights.
Cervantes was apparently so bad at handling the
money that he did have that he was jailed for not
paying his bills, and was constantly broke.
Although Don Quixote made him famous,
Cervantes died a poor man in 1616. Incomplete List Of Works:
Don Qixote Part I
- 1604
Don Quixote Part
II - 1615
