Speed is not the equivalence of velocity, although the two words sometimes seem interchangeable (and sometimes used as such). Velocity is vector (see Vectors) whereas speed is a scalar quantity, Speed is a component (the magnitude or "quantity") of velocity, but velocity has a direction as well.

If we're speaking about the magnitude of the velocity (i.e., not caring about the direction of where that "thing" is going) that is the speed.
