ORGANIZATIONS

To fight against death penalty, many organizations were born with this goal, even on a world scale.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
International movement born in 1961, independent from any government, economical interest, political party or religion. It tries to free prisoners who are imprisoned because of their opinion, skin colour, sex, ethnic group, language, religion (provided that they didn't do violence to anyone). It opposes unconditionally death penalty, supporting sentenced men through many channels:

• Stimulating public opinion's pressure, by sending letters or appeals so that sentences to death won't be executed
• Launching campaigns about single countries where death penalty is applied and asking for legislative modifies
• Binding its national sections to ask for abrogation of death penalty in their country, if it is applied, or to oppose its reintroduction
• Writing annual detailed reports on a world scale about death penalty.

HANDS OFF CAIN*
Hands Off Cain is a league of citizens and parliamentarians for the abolition of death penalty worldwide by 2000. It is a nonprofit organization with a direct or federate adhesion, founded in Brussels, at the European Parliament in 1993.
It leads a worldwide campaign with much focus located in Parliaments of different countries. Usually all campaigns against death penalty try to save an innocent person from execution, or to address a highly emotional case; Hands Off Cain wants to reach all international laws and constitutions in an effort to abolish all penalties of death. The principle they want to establish is: no state may dispose of the lives of its citizens by having its laws impose the death penalty for crimes, even very serious ones.
