DEATH PENALTY
WHEN LIFE GENERATES DEATH (LEGALLY)
SITUATION IN THE EX-USSR
The 15 ex-Sovietic republics still mantain death penalty in their legal system, but the application changes from country to country: the number of capital crimes has been reduced in Belarus, Esthonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Ukraina; Esthonia maintains it only for war crimes; in October 1994 death penalty was abolished for the women; in Ukraina all information is covered by the State secret.
In these republics the main reason to maintain death penalty is the necessity of opposing the increase of criminality.
