The Martian surface seems to present a host of contradictions. The southern, older hemisphere is heavily cratered; whereas, the northern, younger terrain contains volcanoes, valleys, dry river beds, and evidence of glacial activity. There are several natural phenomena on Mars, such as the large dust storms that can completely engulf the planet at times, the growth and shrinkage of the polar ice caps, and most importantly, erosion.
