Three monkeys spent a day gathering coconuts together. When they had finished, they were very tired and fell asleep. The following morning the first monkey woke up. Not wishing to disturb his friends, he decided to divide the coconuts into 3 equal piles, but there was one left over. So he threw the odd one away, helped himself to his share, and went home. A few minutes later the second monkey awoke. Not realizing that the first had already gone, he too divided the coconuts into 3 equal heaps and found one left over, threw the odd one away, helped himself to his fair share, and went home. And then the third monkey did exactly the same. What was the smallest possible number of coconuts left?
