How to change Your Display Settings:

If you are using a PC machine operated by Windows 95 or later then first open the "Start menu" and inside the directory labeled "Settings" you should find and open an item labeled "Control Panel."  Once a widow opens, displaying the contents of the "Control Panel," locate and then open the file named "Display."  Inside the "Display Properties" window that appears click the upper menu item named "Settings."  Now you should be able to find a control called "Screen Area" that you can use to adjust the the size of your display.  For this page a screen area of 800 by 600 pixels or larger is recommended.

If you are using a Macintosh first open the "Apple menu" (upper left corner) and select the "Control Panel."  Once the Control Panel window opens, select and then open the item labeled "Monitors and Sound."  Inside the "Monitors and Sound" window that opens, you should be able to find a control that adjusts the screen area of your display.  For this page a screen area of 800 by 600 pixels or larger is recommended.

If your display settings are gray or otherwise unajustable, then there are three possible solutions.  First, your specific monitor may not support any other screen areas than the default setting - which can usually only be solved by purchasing a different monitor.  Second, your video card may not be able to support different screen areas, which is only corrected with the installation of a different video card.  And Third, the there may just be a small problem with the software used as for your monitor driver, which is easliy fixed by trying a different but still compatible monitor driver.

What Does Screen Area Mean?

The sceen area is composed of both a "width" and a "height."  The "width" is typically the first number of the total screen area given in the form: 800 by 600 pixels, where "height" is the second number.  Depending on your monitor, a certain width/hieght combination or screen area might be preferable to use, thus it is likely your computer uses this as the default value that will remain until you alter it through one of the above procedures.  For instance, it is common for 13 inch monitors to have default resolutions of 800 by 600 pixels, whereas 17 inch displays default 1024 by 768 pixels.  As a rule of thumb, the larger the two numbers the more your monitor will display - in effect this will also reduce the size of everything you see on your monitor.
