St. Paul's Cathedral

St. Paul's Cathedral, located in London is the Church of England.

St. Paul's Cathedral replaced old St. Paul's which was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. It wasn't until 1675 that Sir Christopher Wren designed and built the new Cathedral, completing it in 1710.

Wren realized that the dome of Saint Peter's Basilica was cracking and thought up a better way to build a dome so that it would not crack. So he used three lightweight structures: first an inner hemi-spherical dome consisting of 18 inch bricks, a central cone made of brick also 18 inches and the outer part is made of lead-sheathed timber.

Funerals for Lord Nelson, Duke of Welllington and Sir Winston Churchill, as well as the wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, have all taken place in St. Paul's Cathedral.

Christopher Wren was an astronomer and inventor with 100 building designs to his name. He often used new concepts for his structural designs. Newton also considered him one of " the greatest Geometers of our times".
