What is a Citizens Job?

What is a citizens job? A
question disregarded far too often by Americans today. When the
Constitution was written, and article was devoted to each of the
three branches of government outlining their role, but none for
the citizen. Yet, as an American, certain things are expected of
you. Certain things that might even take some effort on your part
as well. The number one job of a citizen is voting in elections.
Voting is the best check we have against tyranny in the
government and incompetent politicians. If you Congressman is
supporting abortion and you do not like it, vote him out. If your
Senator wants to increase the power of the I.R.S. and you do not
agree, vote him out. If the president cannot keep his pants on,
and you do not think it is appropriate, vote him out. In the end
it is the vote that the makes politicians accountable. And, if
you want to vote, the first thing to do is register. Today, this
can even be done on-line through the American Voters Coalition at
http://www.avc.org and through M.T.V.'s Rock the Vote campaign at http://www.rockthevote.org . These two sites are not only a place to register
but centers for the next job of a citizen not just voting,
but voting intelligently. In this day and age, the special
interest groups influence politicians more then citizens can only
because people vote for the candidate with the most television
air play, not the best one for the job. To prevent this, one most
vote based on the issues. The American Voters Coalition (http://www.avc.org) and M.T.V. (http://www.rockthevote.org) both provide information about the candidate and
the issues at the aforementioned web-sites. More information is
always available. You can contact the Congressional Quarterly's
American Voter at http://voter.cq.com ,
the Federal Voting Assistance Program at http://www.fvap.gov , and the National Voting Rights Institute at http://world.std.com/~nvri . No matter where you get your information, the key
is you understand the issues and know the candidates before you
vote. Good luck in your quest to be a good citizen, and remember,
vote smart.
