The South African tourism industry contributes 4.7% of the gross domestic product (1995). The industry employs about 550 000 people, this means that 1 in 25 jobs are linked to tourism.

Ecotourism is the most rapidly expanding section of the tourism industry.  Activities that fall under ecotourism include:- nature photography; bird-watching; botanical studies; snorkelling; hiking and mountain climbing.   Ecotourism has the potential to bring in foreign exchange and investment.

South Africa's diversity makes it possibly one of the most exciting and interesting eco-destinations.  With the abundance of national, provincial and private game reserves, South Africa is the ideal place to see animals in their natural environment.

At South Africa's larger game reserves, you are able to see Africa's Big Five.  It was every trophy hunter's dream to shoot The Big Five.  Nowadays  the challenge is to photograph them in their natural environment.
