Mpumalunga meaning place where the sun rises. It is bordered by Mozambique, with most of this border being in the Kruger Park. It is surrounded by grasslands, mountains, and the lower regions of the Lowveld. The largest nature reserve in South Africa is the Blyde River Canyon. The Chrissiesmeer is the largest fresh water lake in South Africa. The Sudwala caves are a major tourist attraction. Two of the main tourist attractions are the Kruger National Park and Pilgrims Rest.

The Lowveld region has a subtropical climate and yields fruits such as mangoes, avocados, litchis, bananas, paw-paws, guavas, grenadillas and a variety of nuts and vegetables. The forestry plantations are mainly of exotic trees such as pine, gum and Australian Wattles. It is the biggest region of forestry plantations in South Africa.

It is very rich in coal, and thus the 3 largest power stations in the Southern Hemisphere are situated here. This consequently means that it has the largest air pollution in the country.
